The Cheapest Upgrade That Doubles an Old Laptop's Speed

Under $60 and 45 minutes will make a five-year-old Windows laptop feel like a new one. Here's the upgrade our technicians recommend more than any other — and how to know if yours qualifies.

Every year we get asked the same question: 'Is my laptop worth saving?' Nine times out of ten, the answer is yes — because the single cheapest upgrade in computing history is still available in 2026, and it works. Meet the SATA/NVMe SSD swap.

Why SSDs make old laptops feel new

Spinning hard drives (HDDs) top out at ~100 MB/s and physically move mechanical parts to find data. Modern SSDs read at 500–7,000 MB/s with zero seek time. On a boot-and-open-Chrome test, SSDs are typically 5–15× faster than the HDD they replace. It's the single biggest speed jump in consumer computing.

Does my laptop qualify?

  1. Any Windows laptop 2015–2020 that still has a spinning HDD — 100% yes.
  2. Any laptop with an old, tiny SATA SSD (128 GB) — 1 TB upgrade both speeds it up and ends the disk-full nagging.
  3. Any 2017+ ultrabook with an NVMe SSD — swapping to a faster/larger NVMe still helps but with diminishing returns.
  4. Sealed / soldered SSDs (M1/M2/M3 MacBooks, some ultrabooks) — cannot upgrade internally; use a Thunderbolt external instead.

The 2026 sweet-spot parts

  • 2.5" SATA SSD (for older laptops with spinning drives): Crucial MX500 1 TB — around $55.
  • M.2 NVMe SSD (for most 2017+ laptops): Crucial P3 Plus or WD Blue SN580 1 TB — around $60.
  • External Thunderbolt SSD (for sealed-storage Macs): OWC Envoy Pro 1 TB — around $130.
  • Cloning software: Macrium Reflect Free (Windows) or Time Machine (Mac).

The upgrade at a glance

  1. Buy the right SSD for your laptop's slot (SATA or NVMe).
  2. Buy a $10 USB-to-SATA/M.2 adapter to clone via USB.
  3. Clone the old drive to the new SSD with Macrium Reflect Free (30–60 mins).
  4. Open the laptop, swap the drives (15 mins for most models).
  5. Reboot. Marvel at the boot time.

Also worth doing at the same time

  • Add RAM if your model allows it (4 GB → 8 GB or 8 GB → 16 GB is a huge second win, usually $30–$40).
  • Blow the dust out of the fan and replace thermal paste while you're inside.
  • Replace the battery if it's under 80% capacity.

When to skip and just replace

If the laptop is older than 2015, has soldered RAM/SSD and only 4 GB, has a cracked hinge or dying screen — spend the money on a new machine instead. We'll always tell you honestly during the diagnostic.

Old laptop feeling its age? Book a $79 SSD upgrade (parts + labour, cloning included) — turnaround under 2 hours, backed by our 30-day workmanship warranty. Same job for Macs from $89.
