We remove malware for a living, so you might expect us to sell you the most expensive antivirus on the shelf. The honest answer is more interesting: what you need depends on how you use your computer — and for many people, the best protection costs nothing.
The free baseline is genuinely good now
Microsoft Defender — built into Windows 10 and 11 — scores within a few points of paid suites in independent lab tests (AV-TEST, AV-Comparatives) and adds no ads, no upsell pop-ups and no performance tax. On a Mac, XProtect and Gatekeeper handle the common threats quietly. For careful users who keep their system updated, this baseline is enough.
When paying actually makes sense
Paid suites earn their money in specific situations, not universally:
- You handle client data or run a business — you need ransomware rollback, central management and audit logs.
- Kids or less technical family members use the machine — web filtering and scam-site blocking catch what habits don't.
- You bank and shop on the same PC daily — hardened browser modes and anti-phishing layers add real friction for attackers.
- Multiple devices under one roof — one licence covering five to ten devices is cheaper than per-machine free tools with gaps.
What to ignore completely
Ignore 'your PC is infected!' pop-ups telling you to buy a cleaner — real antivirus never advertises through scare banners. Ignore benchmark charts on vendor websites. And ignore any suite that slows your machine noticeably in the first week; security that punishes you gets switched off, which is worse than none.
Our vendor-neutral shortlist
- Careful home user, Windows: Microsoft Defender + updates on + MFA. Spend $0.
- Family PC with mixed users: a reputable paid suite with web protection — Bitdefender, ESET or similar mid-tier, around $40–60/year.
- Small business: business-grade endpoint protection with central reporting — this is the one category where free is false economy.
- Mac users: built-in protections plus a reputable on-demand scanner for occasional second opinions.
One antivirus, not three
A final note from the repair bench: a surprising share of the 'slow PCs' we fix are simply running two or three security products fighting each other. If a machine came with a trial suite, expired AV and a 'PC optimizer', remove all but one. The cleanup alone often restores the speed.
