How to Speed Up Google Chrome on a Slow PC (2026)

Chrome is the world's most popular browser and also its most memory-hungry. If yours has become sluggish, you rarely need a new PC — you need these nine fixes. They take about ten minutes total.

1. Close and audit extensions

Extensions are the #1 cause of a slow Chrome. Go to chrome://extensions and disable everything you don't use daily. Ad blockers, coupon finders and 'shopping assistants' are the worst offenders — some inject scripts into every page you load.

2. Use the built-in Memory Saver

Settings → Performance → turn on Memory Saver. Chrome will freeze inactive tabs and free their RAM, reloading them instantly when you click back. On a 8 GB PC this alone transforms responsiveness.

3. Kill runaway tabs with Chrome's Task Manager

Press Shift+Esc inside Chrome to open its own Task Manager. Sort by Memory — you'll often find one tab (a stuck web app, an autoplaying video) hogging 2 GB. End it.

4. Clear cache and cookies

Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → cached images and files. A bloated cache slows page loads. Keep your passwords and history if you want — just clear the cache.

5–9. Quick wins

1. Update Chrome — Settings → About Chrome. Outdated versions are slower and less secure.
2. Turn off hardware acceleration if pages flicker (Settings → System), or turn it ON if your GPU is capable and it's off.
3. Remove unused profiles — each open profile consumes memory.
4. Reset Chrome to defaults if it's badly broken: Settings → Reset settings. Your bookmarks and passwords survive.
5. As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall Chrome to clear a corrupted install.
