Is It Worth Repairing My Old Laptop? An Honest Decision Guide (2026)

Torn between fixing a five-year-old laptop or buying new? Here is the exact rule-of-thumb our technicians use, plus five questions that decide it every time.

We get asked this three or four times a week: 'My laptop is slow — is it worth fixing or should I just buy a new one?' It's an honest question, and the honest answer depends on five things. Here is the framework we use at Repair Point, with no upsell attached.

The 50% rule

If the total repair cost is less than 50% of a comparable replacement, repair almost always wins. Above 50% and you should think hard. Above 75% and only a sentimental attachment justifies fixing.

5 questions that decide it

  1. How old is the laptop? Under 5 years — repair is usually worth it. Over 7 years — replacement almost always wins.
  2. Is the problem software or hardware? Software issues (viruses, OS reinstall) are cheap. Motherboard and screen replacements on old laptops are not.
  3. Will the manufacturer still update the OS? An out-of-support Windows 10 machine after October 2025 is a security liability, not a bargain.
  4. How much do you actually use it? A rarely-used household laptop can be kept alive cheaply. A daily driver deserves to be reliable.
  5. Are parts still available OEM? Once we can only source used parts, the workmanship warranty becomes 90 days instead of a year.

The single upgrade that almost always works

For any laptop from 2016–2021 with an HDD or a small SSD: a clean SSD swap and clean OS install. Total cost $99–$149, turnaround under 2 hours, and the machine feels like a new $700 laptop for another 3 years. This is the highest-value tech spend we recommend, hands down.

When to skip the repair

  • Cracked motherboard on an out-of-warranty ultrabook.
  • Water damage requiring board-level rework on a 6-year-old machine.
  • A laptop that already got a display replacement, then a battery, then a keyboard.
  • Any 2015-or-older Intel MacBook with a battery under 60% capacity.

Environmental angle

A laptop's manufacturing carbon footprint is about 60% of its lifetime emissions. Every extra year we keep a working laptop alive is a genuine sustainability win. If you can repair — do.
