Liquid on a MacBook is a race against corrosion, not just short-circuits. What you do in the first 60 minutes matters more than anything a repair shop can do afterwards. Follow these steps in order — and skip the rice.

Minute 0–2: Power off immediately

Hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown. Do NOT wait to save your work. Electricity + liquid = corrosion and short circuits. Every second powered-on increases the damage.

Minute 2–5: Unplug everything

Disconnect the charger and any USB/accessories. If you're comfortable and it's a spill you can't stop, disconnecting the battery is ideal — but only if you have the tools and confidence. Otherwise leave it to a technician.

Minute 5–10: Drain, don't spread

  1. Open the lid fully and turn the MacBook upside-down into a tent/A-shape.
  2. This lets liquid drain OUT rather than deeper into the logic board.
  3. Gently blot external liquid with a lint-free cloth — don't push it around.

Minute 10–60: Get it to a technician

The real fix is a professional teardown, ultrasonic cleaning of the logic board, and corrosion removal — ideally within 24–48 hours before corrosion sets in. Sugary or salty liquids (coffee, wine, soda) are far more corrosive than water, so speed matters even more.

What NOT to do

  • Don't try to turn it on 'just to check' — this is how survivable spills become dead logic boards.
  • Don't charge it.
  • Don't assume it's fine because it still works — corrosion damage appears days or weeks later.
