USB-C looks like one standard. It isn't. The same plug can hide a $2 phone cable or a $60 100 W Thunderbolt 4 monster — and using the wrong one is why your MacBook charges to 40% overnight or your monitor won't display 4K. Here's the plain-English map.
The three things a USB-C cable can do (and often doesn't)
- Power delivery (PD): from a puny 15 W trickle to 240 W full laptop-class charging.
- Data speed: from USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) up to Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps) — a 83× range.
- Video: some cables can carry 4K/8K displays over DisplayPort Alt Mode; many can't.
Why cheap USB-C cables are the #1 culprit
A $2 cable from a petrol station is almost always USB 2.0 with no e-marker chip — meaning it caps at ~15 W. Plug it into a 96 W MacBook charger and the MacBook shows 'Not Charging' or trickle-charges overnight. The charger is fine; the cable is the bottleneck.
What the wattage numbers mean
- Under 20 W — phones and earbuds.
- 20–45 W — small tablets, iPad Pro, MacBook Air on trickle.
- 60–100 W — full MacBook Air / M-series MacBook Pro 13, 14.
- 100–140 W — MacBook Pro 16, gaming laptops.
- 140–240 W — high-end mobile workstations. Requires USB-C PD 3.1 (EPR).
How to buy the right one (30-second rule)
- For laptops: buy an e-marked USB-C cable rated for at least the wattage of your charger. 100 W / 5A is a safe default.
- For external displays or docks: look for 'DisplayPort Alt Mode' or 'Thunderbolt' explicitly on the packaging.
- For fast data (external SSDs): USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) minimum, Thunderbolt 4 if the drive is NVMe.
- Stick to Anker, Belkin, Cable Matters, Apple or CalDigit. Off-brand Amazon cables are hit and miss.
The Thunderbolt 4 shortcut
If you never want to think about this again, buy a Thunderbolt 4 (or USB4) cable. They do everything: 40 Gbps data, 100 W charging, 8K video. Downside: shorter (usually 0.8 m) and pricier ($30–$50). Worth it for a desk cable.
