A hot Mac isn't just uncomfortable — sustained heat throttles performance and shortens the life of the battery and logic board. Here are the four real causes, ranked by how often we see them at the workshop.
1. A runaway background process
By far the most common cause. Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight → 'Activity Monitor') and sort by % CPU. Culprits we see weekly: 'mediaanalysisd' (Photos scanning your library), a stuck browser tab, Spotlight re-indexing, or a crashed helper looping at 100%. Quit the offender and the fans stop within a minute.
2. Too many browser tabs (especially Chrome)
Each heavy tab — Google Docs, Figma, YouTube, Slack — is a small computer. Thirty open tabs will keep any Mac's fans running. Use a tab suspender, switch to Safari (far more efficient on Apple Silicon), and close what you're not using.
3. Dust-clogged vents (Intel Macs & older MacBook Pros)
Three-plus years of dust builds an insulating blanket over the heatsink. The fan spins faster and faster but can't move enough air. A professional internal clean and fresh thermal paste drops idle temps 10–20 °C and is a $59 flat-rate remote-guided or workshop service.
4. Blocked airflow + hot environment
- Using the Mac on a bed, sofa or lap blocks the bottom/rear vents. Use a hard flat surface or a $15 stand.
- Direct sunlight or a hot car pushes ambient temperature past the safe range.
- A cheap third-party charger can cause the Mac to run warm during charge — use genuine or reputable USB-C PD chargers.
Tools to monitor temperature
Install a free menu-bar monitor like Stats (open-source) or the trial of iStat Menus to watch CPU temperature and fan RPM in real time. If idle temps sit above 60 °C with nothing running, something is wrong.
Mac still overheating after the basics? Book a $59 remote diagnostic — we'll find the runaway process or confirm it needs a physical clean, and tell you honestly which.
